Nilgai’s Unique Horns: Function and Form

The Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), also known as the blue bull, is the largest antelope in India and a striking feature of the subcontinent's wildlife. This herbivorous animal is primarily found in the grasslands, savannas, and forested regions of northern and central India, as well as parts of Nepal and Pakistan. Males are noted for their distinctive blue-gray coat, while females are a more subdued brown. Despite their size, Nilgais are nimble and can sprint at speeds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph) to escape predators. They are social animals, often found in herds of up to 30 individuals, which include both males and females, although males tend to be solitary or form bachelor groups. Nilgais are known for their grazing habits, feeding mainly on grasses and leaves. Unfortunately, they face threats from habitat destruction and hunting, but are classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN due to their large population and adaptability. Nilgais are crucial in maintaining the balance of their ecosystem, as they help with seed dispersal and contribute to the health of grasslands.
