Phoenix A: The Black Hole That Breaks Our Best Theory of Reality
Both numbers are confirmed. The universe is 13.8 billion years old. Phoenix A weighs around 100 billion times our sun. And those two facts cannot exist together — not with the physics we currently teach.
Phoenix A sits 5.7 billion light-years away at the center of the Phoenix Cluster, one of the most massive structures ever found. To grow this large through normal accretion, it would have needed to feed at maximum theoretical efficiency for longer than the universe has existed. The math doesn't bend. It breaks.
This is the part most accounts skip: Phoenix A isn't dormant. After what may have been hundreds of millions of years of silence, it's feeding again — and the standard cooling-flow model says that shouldn't be happening at this scale.
I went through what the data actually shows, what the textbooks can't account for, and the two surviving theories that still can't fully explain how something this large got here. The James Webb Space Telescope is now finding the same problem at the dawn of the universe. A pattern. Not an anomaly.
The observations answered what Phoenix A is. They didn't answer how many more are out there — sitting in the dark, finished eating long before any instrument existed to watch them.

12:59 — The thermostat is broken — and it's feeding again
15:52 — What's still out there in the dark
If you work in observational cosmology and have looked at the Chandra archival data on this system, the cooling-flow profile is where the real story is. Drop what you found in the comments.
The investigation stays open. New one every week.
