Renault Clio 3 Replace broken gear shifter cable

Not at all a complete and perfect description. I found other videos helpful but did not find one showing how to replace the gear shifter cable/unit for a Renault Clio 3 (2006).

The symptom was that the reverse gear would not stay in place. I found out that it could either be the gear box or the linkage that was broken.

Decided to do the initial trouble shooting myself and ended up doing the full repair.

Steps I went through:

Remove the battery and surrounding plastic box.
Remove the air intake.
Remove the plastic plate that holds the battery.
Now you can see how the gear shifter moves.
For my case it was easy to see why reverse gear did not work. The cable was broken so it could not be pushed in place.

Bought a new gear shifter unit on the scrapyard.

To replace it do the following steps:
Loosen the exhaust system. Mine was in one piece but loosen it was enough to just squeeze through.
Remove the heat shield.
Remove the plastic covers surrounding the gear stick.
Remove the gear stick.
Push it downwards passed the exhaust pipe.

Done.

No just do it in reverse to everything back 🙂

The video mostly shows the refitting.

Enjoy!

Details of the gear shifter can be seen here:
