Identity is a learnt pattern from the past that can become a prison.

But we don’t have to be at the mercy of our past.

In times of stress we can unlock & step out of that prison of the past through our LANGUAGE.

Using “YOU” language can help you pull yourself out of that historic identity & see a perspective that was being missed.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” (Einstein)

Many of the people I work with also talk about chronic illness being a LOSS of identity.

Recovery ironically isn’t so much about regaining that lost identity but building a NEW one.

HOW?
The same way you created your old identity. Through experience. But this time it’s deliberate.

1. BABY STEPS
As children we create our own identity through baby steps. Small daily actions build our sense of self narrative. So do that. Do small daily challenges that your old self would have avoided.
You want to know who you are? Don’t think. Act.

2. ARTWORK ON THE FRIDGE
As children our work is displayed proudly on the fridge. It signals it’s safe to express ourself. So do that. Celebrate your actions & wins with loved one. Share your progress. You are introducing the “new you” to your tribe to celebrate. That co-celebration signals to your brain it’s safe to be this version of you. (Choose wisely who you share with).

3. WHAT WOULD JESUS SAY?
MENTORS & RELGIOUS FIGURES
In times of stress our thinking brain often disengages fro the present moment. What can bring that thinking part back to NOW is a question. Getting into the habit of asking useful questions can bring us back. “What would are Jesus say?” “How would the Dalai Lama respond?” “What would Bear Grylls do right now?” These questions draw from wisdom that we know but have forgotten in the moment. .

👉By deliberately experiecing difficult times in new ways, over time we change our identity to someone who can handle these things.

“It’s just who I am”.

So instead of reverting to the younger version of ourself in times of stress - we revert to the chosen version.

Choose wisely. Choose often. 🫶
