The sundog effect is a beautiful atmospheric optical phenomenon in which bright spots of light appear on either side of the Sun. It is also known as Parhelion.

This effect occurs when sunlight passes through tiny ice crystals present in the atmosphere, usually in high-altitude clouds called Cirrus Clouds. These ice crystals act like prisms, bending (refracting) the light.

As a result, two bright spots appear at about 22° on either side of the Sun. These spots may show slight rainbow colors, with red closer to the Sun and blue farther away.

The sundog effect is a part of Atmospheric Optics, which studies how light interacts with the atmosphere.

In simple terms, a sundog is like a “false sun” formed due to the bending of sunlight by ice crystals in the sky.
