The launch of Mercury-Atlas 9 marked the dramatic end of NASA’s early Mercury program. Piloted by L. Gordon Cooper aboard the spacecraft Faith 7, the mission lasted more than 34 hours and completed 22 Earth orbits.

During the flight, Cooper became the first American to sleep in space and later manually controlled re-entry after onboard system failures—demonstrating remarkable skill during the early days of human spaceflight.
