The Tragedy of Stroud Workhouse

If you fell on hard times or were unable to look after yourself in the nineteenth century, the workhouse would be waiting.

Such was the horror of being admitted that it coloured the likes of Charles Dickens for life. Many accidents and tragedies happened in these spaces and in September 1849, one such tale happened to someone with severe mental health issues. Today, no headstone marks the life of Charles Ireland in Stroud Cemetery but today freelance museum professional & escape room builder Sacha Coward shares his story and the bath that went terribly wrong.
