Avalanche control and road closures - Jasper National Park

See the resulting avalanches from Jasper’s avalanche control February 2020. 53 cm of snowfall and high winds meant avalanches threatened the road. Parks Canada experts dropped explosives from helicopters onto trigger points to safely bring down avalanches while the roads were closed. Avalanche control work is focused on keeping roadways safe, it does not make slopes safe for winter recreationalists. Parks Canada highways staff start clearing the avalanche debris as soon as it is safe to do so to minimize closure times.

Always check 511.alberta.ca for up to date road conditions.
