Dade Massacre: Battle That Started A War

In December 1835, a column of just over 100 U.S. soldiers marched through the Florida wilderness. By sunset, nearly every one of them was dead. Ambushed by a coordinated force of Seminole and Black Seminole warriors, the event—now known as the Dade Massacre—ignited the Second Seminole War, the longest and costliest Indian conflict in American history.

This video unpacks the brutal origins of the battle, from years of broken treaties to the rising resistance led by Seminole leaders like Osceola and Alligator. As tensions escalated over forced relocation under the Indian Removal Act, Florida became a powder keg ready to explode.

Follow the story of Major Francis Dade’s ill-fated march, the deadly ambush near modern-day Bushnell, and the aftermath that reshaped Florida’s history. From the St. Augustine National Cemetery to the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, the legacy of this event still echoes today.
