Pushing back the brake piston is difficult to do by hand. And prying with a tool will only damage the brake piston. The brake piston should be pushed in or turned in evenly slowly. This piece of homemade tool can help with that.

In some ways you have to make your own tools. This brake caliper piston press tool is one of them. Yes you can go to the shop and buy a Brake Pad Spreader for about $10.
