Rescuing A Baby Squirrel: A Lesson In Letting Go

So we found this adorable baby red squirrel laying on the middle of the road. I picked him up and shielded him from the harm of oncoming traffic.

He seemed helpless, and in need of protection.
We wondered why he was on such a harsh and difficult path.

He looked like he needed a rescuer and protector. And in my supportive hands, it may have appeared he had found his hero.

But sometimes, the most loving thing we can do is resist the urge to make life comfortable for others. By letting them face their challenges, we allow them to grow and develop. Even though it’s a difficult decision, this act of love acknowledges their capability and potential and recognizes that the struggle makes them stronger.

As much as we wanted to keep him and care for him we returned him to the wild,
trusting in the greater wisdom and flow of nature, we passed him from my hand, to the wise and loving hand of existence and as we did, he left us with some bittersweet farewell chirping…
