Even Your Frontier Model Has Downtime — Build a Fallback Before You Need It #shorts

Two and a half hours. That's how long Claude Opus 4.8 logged elevated API errors on June 15 — 06:20 to 08:56 UTC, now resolved (status.claude.com). If your agent only calls one model, that outage was your downtime, not Anthropic's.

That's a single point of failure, and the fix is boring: a fallback. Call your primary first; on a 5xx, a timeout, or an open circuit breaker, retry the same request on a second provider — different base URL, the response normalized so your pipeline doesn't care which model answered.
