FSU campus shooting suspect released from hospital, now charged with murder
On April 17, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee. The suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a political science student, opened fire near the Student Union, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries. Ikner used a Glock handgun and a shotgun, the latter of which failed to discharge initially. He then proceeded to shoot victims, including Robert Morales, a campus dining coordinator, and Tiru Chabba, an Aramark executive. The attack lasted less than five minutes before police apprehended Ikner after he failed to comply with commands. Ikner was shot in the jaw during the confrontation and hospitalized.
Ikner was released from the hospital on May 12, 2025, and has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but acquaintances suggest he held extreme right-wing views. Due to his familial ties to law enforcement—his stepmother is a deputy with the Leon County Sheriff's Office—Ikner was transferred to the Wakulla County Detention Facility to avoid any conflicts of interest. He remains in custody awaiting his court appearance .
The FSU community has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with classes canceled and a vigil held in honor of the victims. The university has also established a Student Emergency Fund to support those impacted by the shooting .
