Myth of the Black Experience: Blacks Lie About Experiencing “Racism” Out of Fear/Anger & Imagination

Jesse talks to older black caller Maze of Dayton, Ohio, who accuses Jesse’s white callers who decry how angry blacks act of being in the KKK and wanting to hang blacks and burn crosses. She says she never moves off the side walk to stand aside while white people pass (she says she used to have to do that as a kid growing up in the South, supposedly in Alabama where Jesse grew up during Jim Crow). Jesse never did that, although she tries to say Jesse did. She told her kids never to give up their place in line at the drug store for white people. Jesse asks why her husband let her traumatize her children by teaching them that nonsense as though it was happening. She says her husband is not her head, but they walk side-by-side. Jesse urges Maze to forgive, because she’s angry about something that may have happened in the past and she can’t see clearly.

THEN: Caller Juan from New York says it’s true that blacks lie about experiencing “racism” out of fear of punishment from other blacks if they tell the truth. (James had brought up this point earlier with Maze, as Jesse, Joel, and other blacks have never “experienced racism” or discrimination.) Juan grew up in Baltimore (he’s called before and had a change of heart after he punched a Mexican and stole his bike). He now feels alone and admits he lies when around his brothers or friends to avoid conflict. But Jesse says he should let them go and live his own life, rather than be dragged back to lies, confusion and darkness.
