Nissan Patrol GQ TD42 Service - Oil Change for Engine, Gearbox + Transfer Case & Diesel Fuel Filter

UPDATE: Since doing this service I have updated the gearbox oil to 75W-85, specifically a API GL-4. This is a better option IF your gearbox uses yellow metals such as brass and copper. I can't confirm if the GQ Patrol gearboxes uses these (I suspect it does), but the update feels like an improvement.

It's the end of the year, and while I'm not away camping I'm taking some time to get my TD42 GQ Nissan Patrol back in top shape with a service. If you're looking to do the same for your own Patrol, follow along and we'll show you how it's done.

Gearbox & Transfer Case Oil (see top):
*** A quick note on oil choice here ***: I used a 75W-90 GL-5 oil here, which has been working well for me for years. A GL-5 oil offers a little bit better extreme pressure protection on gearing, for a heavy vehicle that's often under high load I think this could be better, but can cause more wear and tear on yellow metals such as brass and copper in the gearbox (such as your synchros). While I have preferred the 75w-90 I mention in this video for past servicing, there is a Nulon 75w-85 option which is a GL-4 API and could be the better option for most Patrol Gearboxes. If you're unsure I highly recommend consulting a manual specific to your vehicle, or checking with a trusted mechanic what oil to run.
