Tutorial - How to Roll Sharp Fret Ends and Fix Fret Sprout
Here is a short video describing how I use a StewMac leveling file to smooth protruding fret ends. I go on to show a technique with a small fret end dressing file to roll the fret ends, and finally some micro-mesh sanding pads.
PS: There are some great comments below I suggest you read. One viewer questioned why I went from a file straight to 4000 grit. I sometimes start a little lower around 1000, but if you go too low you'll scratch the neck up causing yourself more work. Check out this guy's vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH4NDfwWaIY). He starts at 2400. I just made another vid where I start at 400--see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLJ5qllb6a0. Conclusion: I think that's too low. I will continue to start sanding with 1000 or higher. It just works.
Another concern raised was discoloration, as wood touched by the file around fret ends may look different than rest of neck. It does happen, but the benefits of fixing the sharp fret ends outweigh those concerns. Also, you can tape off the neck if you're worried about it. I don't because it saves time. Speaking of tape, when you get to the high frets, you want to use tape/cardboard or something to protect the body, when using a file up there.
Last I wonder if anyone out there does this same treatment but uses a beveled fret end file instead of a flat file? Let me know in comments. cheers
