New Way Now: Every Cure launches 9 drug repurposing programs with Google Cloud support

*Executive summary:* There are approximately 4,000 FDA-approved drugs for approximately 4,000 diseases — but there are another roughly 14,000 diseases that do not have treatments. That’s partly because there’s almost no financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to find new use cases for existing drugs. Dr. David Fajgenbaum created Every Cure after his own life-threatening diagnosis revealed both this critical treatment gap and how existing drugs can be repurposed for diseases beyond their intended purpose. Now, the nonprofit is on a mission to save lives with the drugs we already have.

*Challenge:* While 4,000 FDA-approved drugs exist for about 4,000 diseases, another 14,000 diseases remain without treatments. That's partly because there's no financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to find new use cases for existing drugs. Dr. David Fajgenbaum created Every Cure after his own life-threatening diagnosis with Castleman's Disease revealed both this critical treatment gap and how existing drugs can be repurposed for diseases beyond their intended purpose. To make it possible to scale drug repurposing across all 3,000 drugs and 22,000 diseases — which equals 66 million possible combinations — Every Cure uses Google Cloud.

*Solution:* While most drug repurposing efforts take a single drug or disease and look for a possible match, Every Cure's MATRIX platform pioneered "computational pharmacophenomics,” (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39909662 ), which looks at all drugs and all diseases simultaneously and quantifies the strength of evidence between them. Google Cloud — particularly Gemini, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and GPUs — enables this unprecedented approach by scanning across the world's knowledge of all medicines, human biology, and diseases in one unified platform. Gemini supercharges predictions so researchers can focus on the best opportunities, while BigQuery and Cloud Storage ensure seamless work across tools at scale.

*Result:* With the first version of Every Cure's platform, it took 100 days to run the model. Now with the combination of GPUs, Gemini, and BigQuery, that process is down to 17 hours, time savings that make the team’s ambitious mission feasible. In just one year of running on Google Cloud, Every Cure has launched nine active drug repurposing programs. The potential impact of repurposing is significant. For instance, research has shown that when lidocaine is injected around a tumor before surgery, it can reduce the risk of metastasis in five years by as much as 29%, which could save hundreds of thousands of lives around the world. With its goal to repurpose 15 to 25 treatments for 15 to 25 diseases by 2030, Every Cure relies on Google Cloud as an essential partner to make the impossible possible.

*Highlights and key takeaways from our interview with Dr. David Fajgenbaum, Co-founder & President at Every Cure:*

→ “We use AI to unlock the full potential of the drugs we have to treat the diseases and the patients that need them.”

→ “Thanks to Gemini tools, we're able to look across the world's knowledge of all drugs, all diseases, to put it all into one place so that way our data scientists can find promising repurposing opportunities.”

→ “To really productize and scale these early machine learning models, we needed the Google backbone for taking what was an early idea for a small model and applying it at scale.”

*Google Cloud products used:* BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Gemini, GPUs
