In February 2009, fifteen year old Sam Kerr made her international debut for Australia's senior national team in a friendly against Italy as a 76th minute substitute for Amber Neilson. In February 2010, she was named in the squad to tour New Zealand the same month.

In May 2010, she was selected in the squad to compete at the 2010 AFC Women's Asian Cup which was the qualifier for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. After scoring in the second match of the group against South Korea, she scored the opening goal of the final against North Korea before seeing Australia taking out the title via the penalty shoot-out.After the tournament, she would only play the one match in the 2010 Peace Queen Cup where she was brought down in the box by one of the Mexican defenders
