customizing a NATO strap 1: adding holes (see the description for extra important information).
This video shows you how I prefer to add holes to my NATO straps. please note that this is only meant as an explanation of what works best for me. If you take it as advise, then I will not be accountable for unsatisfactory results, any damages, injuries or lost limbs.
with that in mind I want to address some obvious safety issues with this method:
1. while handling the knife blades, make sure not to cut into yourself or the strap.
2. while handling the hot nail, be careful not to burn yourself or any other fabric that might come in contact with it afterwards. Know where your fingers are, also underneath the strap. Predetermine and prepare a safe spot where you will put the still hot nail before you even start heating it.
3. don't inhale the fumes of the fabric that you burn away. This is ghastly and can not be good for your health
another set of notes as clarification:
I described the nail as white hot. With this I mean I heated it till it lit up bright. This is not however the temperature and colour of the nail as I punctured the hole. since the nail cools down rather quickly, it was only red hot when I used it. the most important thing to understand is that it needs to burn away the strap material, rather than melt and puncture it, in order to get a clean hole.
I described how I only made the slightest contact with the fabric needed to burn away the excess material. Although much will burn away without contact to the nail, I did 'puncture' the fabric to a depth of 5 mm. I left the nail there as short as possible and redrew as it was still very hot. In theory this helps with excess material not clinging to the nail and being drawn back into (and maybe even out of) the hole.
