IMPORTANT EXTRA INFO FOR JEWISH TOURISTS!!!
- Some places in the video have since closed down (some just during lockdown and some completely). Argentina's economic crisis means that places are coming and going all the time, unfortunately.
- Products in regular supermarkets in Argentina are NOT generally kosher unless they’re listed on the Ajdut kosher app (below) or they have a hechsher. Products with the same packaging as ones you’ve spotted in a kosher supermarket may not be supervised so be careful to check!
- Similarly, some food places are listed as “kosher” online but are actually just kosher-style (i.e. delis or Middle Eastern restaurants). Be sure to check before eating out.
- There are 3 McDonald’s stalls in the Abasto shopping mall but only 1 is kosher (look out for the kosher sign).
- Early dinners don’t exist in South America. Restaurants typically open around 8pm for dinner.
- Kosher restaurants in Buenos Aires mostly take cash payments and a 10% tip is standard. I have photos of menus but I can’t tell you how much you’ll spend on a meal as prices are changing all the time (even for groceries).
- Don’t carry TOO much cash - you already stand out as a tourist so don’t make yourself even more of a target. Carry a photocopy of your passport with you wherever you go - you’ll need it as ID for card payments.
- There are a number of kosher supermarkets in Once near the kosher food places, 3 in Palermo, and a few others dotted around. Want to try some Argentinian specialities? Get yourself some ‘dulce de leche’, ‘alfajores’ and ‘medialunas’!
