In the 1950s and '60s, the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation designed and manufactured the very popular SGS 1-26 and SGS 2-33 gliders. They are easy to fly, with simple construction, and are quite rugged and forgiving. A powered light aircraft, the Schweizer SA 1-30 was tested but did not go into production.
The Schweizer SGS 1-26 is a United States One-Design, single-seat, mid-wing glider built by Schweizer Aircraft of Elmira, New York
The SGS 1-26 enjoyed a very long production run from its first flight in 1954 until 1979 when production was ended.
"Much of the glamour of soaring lies in the realm of high performance, high aspect ratio open class sailplanes, but the backbone of the soaring movement in this country, and any other, lies in the local club operations. These are the weekend fliers who have fun around the airport, make some cross-country flights, and enter local contests. For this sort of flying, the 1-26 is unexcelled."
Everyone has flown them at least once. They are legendary for their lovely handling and their ease to train solo students with, but the 23:1 glide discourages anyone from taking them as a serious sailplane.
Or do they?
Most people don’t realize that the little potato bombing 1-26 is the best cross-country glider ever built. Bold
You’ll notice that the Sprite is highlighted by the 1-26 in the background. This is no mistake, as they are similar in many ways. The Sprite and the 1-26 offers a lot of bang for the buck: they handle nicely and have good looks. The 1-26 is the sports car of the skies. Except, while a nice Sprite sells for a little over $25,000 today, you can pick up a well-equipped, clean 1-26 for $8,000.

The club (TSA) is maintained and operated by the voluntary efforts of its more than 200 members. The club operates from its own airfield and owns six single and four two-place sailplanes, plus four Pawnee tow planes. TSA operates year-round on most flyable Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The club also operates on an unscheduled basis on other weekdays when the flying weather is really good!
Why learn to fly gliders?
The Wright brothers knew that the way to get into aviation was through gliders. Their experiments in design and practical application in flying gliders helped them to understand the complexities of powered flight. If you are new to aviation, learning to fly gliders provides basic skills valuable to any aviation pursuit.
If you are an experienced pilot, you could join the rank of glider pilots such as Steve Fossett, Neil Armstrong, Chesley Sullenberger, and many other renowned aviators. Flying sailplanes may re-introduce you to the joy of basic flight which doesn’t require noisy, gas-guzzling engines or complicated technology to fly.
