Cultivar Selection & Pruning Home Fruits

Joanna visits with Kristin Hildabrand, Warren County Extension Agent for Horticulture to talk about Cultivar Selection & Pruning Home Fruits.

Select a disease resistant cultivar when growing fruits in Kentucky. These varieties can tolerate disease pressure better than other fruit varieties. A disease resistant cultivar can also reduce the amount of sprays needed in order to have quality fruit.

Purchase cultivars through a reputable nursery rather than a big box store. They specialize in tree production and replace plants, if there is a problem. If interested in finding out the best cultivar for various home fruits in Kentucky, stop by your local Extension Office to pick up a copy of the Fruit and Nut Cultivar and Nursery Sources publication.

After selecting the fruit cultivar, pruning is another important practice to perform. Make sure that garden tools are clean and sharp before beginning. Clean and sharpened blades ensure a nice clean cut from the plant. If you have had trouble with disease in the past, sanitize pruning blades with a 10 percent bleach solution or cleaning wipes in between pruning cuts.
