Mother of Beaumont Shooting Victim Speaks Out After Grand Jury Decision

The mother of 18-year-old Brandon Briggs is speaking out after a Jefferson County grand jury declined to indict two suspects on murder charges connected to the deadly shooting at Perlstein Park in Beaumont. The decision resulted in John Harrell and Marion Smith, both 18, being released from jail after the grand jury returned no bills in the case.

Authorities say the shooting happened during what investigators described as a planned fight involving BISD students at the park in the Amelia neighborhood. Police found Briggs suffering from a gunshot wound, and he later died at the hospital.

While the murder charges were dropped, prosecutors did indict 18-year-old Darian Harrington on a tampering with evidence charge. Briggs’ mother says she remains heartbroken and believes more should be done in the investigation as she continues pushing for justice for her son.
