Arthur Brooks, Ph.D. and Jeffrey Goldberg: From Strength to Strength

At the height of his career at the age of 50, Arthur Brooks, Ph.D., embarked on a seven-year journey to discover how to transform his future from one of disappointment over waning abilities into an opportunity for progress. From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life is the result. It addresses a universal dilemma: What can we do now to make our older years a time of happiness and purpose?

To structure his argument, Prof. Brooks drew on social science, philosophy, biography, theology, and eastern wisdom. He researched successful historical figures and conducted interviews with everyday men and women, some happy, others not. He determined that the secret to growing older lies not in acquiring more, but in stripping things away—that true life success is well within our reach. From Strength to Strength is an evidence-based, spiritually rich guide for cultivating meaning and a different kind of success in the second half of our lives.

With a rapidly growing Atlantic podcast (“How to Build a Happy Life”) and column (“How to Build a Life”) Prof. Brooks has become a popular authority for advice on how to navigate change, strengthen relationships, and find happiness. He is also well-known for his work as a social scientist, professor of the practice of public leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, a senior fellow at the Harvard Business School, former president of the American Enterprise Institute, and bestselling author of Love Your Enemies and numerous others.

Prof. Brooks will be in conversation with Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of The Atlantic. Mr. Goldberg joined The Atlantic in 2007 as a national correspondent and was named the 164-year-old magazine’s 14th editor in chief in October 2016. During his editorship, The Atlantic has set new audience and subscription records, and its journalistic reach has become global. Digiday recently stated that The Atlantic “is enjoying its most relevant cultural moment since the 19th century.”
