Cold war: Russians freeze as attempts to break Ukraine's infrastructure massively backfires
Russian cities have lost power, heating and water supplies as Putin’s campaign to cripple Ukraine’s infrastructure backfires. A massive electricity outage in the Siberian city of Omsk left more than one million people without any electricity. Meanwhile an ‘accident’ at the Tavricheskaya substation, close to Omsk, on January 4th ruptured a hot water pipe which Russia uses to heat homes without the pipe freezing. That left people without any central heating as temperatures plunged below freezing.
Residents in Moscow were also left without any heating as temperatures plummeted to -25°C (-13°F) after more water pipes burst. People desperately tried to keep themselves warm by burning what appears to be furniture and pieces of wood. To make matters worse, a central heating pipe laid down in Novosibirsk in 1974 cracked and flooded the city. In Khimki, just 10 miles (16km) from the Kremlin, 215 apartment buildings, eight schools, 17 kindergartens and four hospital clinics had no heating or hot water in freezing temperatures for over a week.
