A day in the life of a Zebra Finch (Part 1 of 2)
This short video gives a peek into the very busy life of Pepe Caliente, a male Australian Zebra Finch found as a fledgling 6 years ago in a boy's restroom. Ever since then he has been living happily in a room with complete freedom to go in and out of his cage whenever he wishes to do so. He has very distinctive features indicative of the males of his species: white speckled brown feathers, a zebra striped tail, a black band across his breast, a white underbelly, grey velvety feathers, a red beak and bright orange cheeks.
Pepe Caliente has provided and continues to provide loads of entertainment as he goes about his daily routines, a sampling of which is shown in the video. Over the last 6 years, he has become increasingly territorial by laying claim to various inanimate objects in the room such as a TV remote, USB port, keyboard and mouse, so much so that he will often vigorously peck me if I touch them. As you will see in the video, he gets raving mad if attempts are made to touch his nesting material which he leaves placed all over the room and in every nook and cranny he can squeeze himself into. He will often peck at my feet as I enter or leave the room just so that he can let me know that he is the BOSS, and so I back off and let him believe that he is indeed #1 in the pecking order. Nevertheless, Pepe Caliente does show his affection in his own birdlike way by napping very close to me, and sometimes actually sleeping on my shoulder, arm or thigh while I am sitting reading a book or working on the computer. He also alerts me in his own birdlike fashion whenever large birds fly past by the windows by sounding out loud warning calls while buzzing around me.
The music track on the video is a song I wrote and performed just for Pepe Caliente.
Hope you enjoy the video,
