China: The bubble that never pops - A discussion with the author, Tom Orlik
'China: The bubble that never pops': A discussion with the author, Tom Orlik, and with Jonathan Fenby and Jinny Yan
Why you should watch: Tom Orlik's new book addresses one of the key questions in contemporary economics: Why has China's meteoric rise from poverty-stricken backwater to the second largest economy in the world been so rapid - and is it evidence that the West's belief in a (more or less) free market system is misplaced? Equally important, will China's rise continue? Or will the tensions within Chinese society lead to an implosion? In particular, has the coronavirus changed the rules, and if so, can Beijing adapt? Tom's conclusions are broadly optimistic - conclusions that are generally endorsed by Jinny Yan and Jonathan Fenby, albeit with significant caveats.
Tom Orlik is chief economist at Bloomberg Economics, based in Washington. He was previously chief Asia economist. Before joining Bloomberg, he was a columnist at the WSJ. He has spent 11 years in Asia, mostly in China. Before that, he was a policy analyst at the UK Treasury, and an adviser to the UK Executive Director at the World Bank and IMF.
Jonathan Fenby is chairman of China Research at TS Lombard. He is a former editor of the South China Morning Post and the Observer. Between 1998 and 2019, he wrote 17 books - nine on China (including a biography of Chiang Kai-shekj) and four on France.
Jinny Yan is chief China economist at ICBC Standard Bank in London, which she joined in 2016 from Standard Chartered.
