A Typology of Practice change on farms

Agriculture is under increasing pressure to redesign farm systems in response to the constant demand to increase productivity, the need to adapt to climate change, the need to halt or reverse the damaging effects of agriculture on the environment. Meeting these pressures is thought to require a combination of responses ranging from incremental changes to farm systems through to their complete transformation.

We present a novel approach to classifying changes to farm systems as a framework for predicting the adoption of practices and technologies and for inferring the nature of the resources, skills, knowledge, planning and time needed to implement change on farms. We test the resulting typology using data from a survey data of livestock farmers in New Zealand on their adoption of a variety of practices and technologies, some that are intended to improve agricultural productivity and some that are thought to be environmentally beneficial.
