When the ball is wide, you’ve got different options with your footwork. For instance, you can turn, step across and run to hit the ball on your front foot; however, most players block their hips when using this footwork pattern. Hence, ensure to square up with your outside leg after hitting the ball.

If you take a big step out and a shuffle step, you’ll be able to cover a lot of ground and get up to the singles sideline to hit the wide ball. In fact, Jeff argues that this is a more efficient way to move on the baseline. You can use the shuffle step footwork on diverse scenarios, which makes it a very versatile movement pattern.

Finally, keep in mind that the rhythm of your movement is dictated by the speed of the ball. This is a unique cue that can immediately transform your tennis footwork. Consider integrating the shuffle footwork pattern as part of your tennis training, and see how it can help you to get to the next level.
