During the time of the late Shang dynasty, the kings who ruled the land were merciless, and constantly fought battles and killed their feudal vassals to secure power. One of the feudal vassals killed was the king of Zhou, and after his death, his son Chang Ji inherited the throne. Chang Ji was a man of high moral standards and treated his people well, which made him famous and became known as a sage.

The current King of Shang, Di Xin, grew afraid and jealous, so he eventually tricked Chang Ji into visiting his empire and later arrested him. Di Xin wished to kill Chang Ji, but it was not allowed to kill a “sage” without reason. So he let him rot in prison.
