DJ Rob Swift: Vinyl Only
I decided to step outside of my comfort zone for this weekend’s TABLETURNS - open turntablist events and returned to vinyl. The thought of getting up on a #tableturns stage with a laptop and performing routines i created on vinyl just didn’t sit right with me.
Mega respect to Roli Rho and #tableturns for continuing to facilitate a platform for DJs to showcase their skills. Honorable mention to the host with the most Deejay Dp-One for creating a vibe in the room that let everyone feel like they deserved to rock. To those of you who turned out, I think it’s dope y’all supported a grass roots event like this as there aren’t many of these left. Respect.
Playlist Fun Facts
1. "The Bridge | "Public Enemy #1" routine - I never wanted to just "beat juggle" in my routines, and so I came up with the idea of intentionaly making the intro to "Public Enemy #1" skip to prolong it and play a melody on the turntable's pitch while adding the drums on MC Shan's "The Bridge". *Created in 1992
2. "Get Ur Freak On" routine - I went out and bought duplicate copies of this song the minute it dropped. I knew there were patterns I'd stumble across on this joint. *Created in 2001
3. "Welcome To The Terrordome" routine - I didn't realize how dope this song was to cut until I saw my mentor Dr. Butcher flip it. The production on it was arranged in such a way that you could literally get lost for hours scratching and "beat juggling" the different parts of this song. Originally, Dr. Butcher gave me the ending portion of the routine with the James Brown "Get Up Get Into To It Get Involved" guitar licks. Eventually I found my way to the beginning of the songs and created various "beat juggle" patterns with Chuck D's voice. I usually advice against working with voices when you're "juggling" but it worked like a charm here. *Created in 1992
4. "Dr. Knockboot" routine - They don't make Hip Hop songs like this anymore. The sequencing of the drums and synth are a "beat jugglers" dream. *Created in 1999
5. "Rock The Bells" routine - Every battle DJ should have a routine on this record. "Rock The Bells" is to "Beat Juggling" what the "Ahhh" sound is to scratching. *Created in 1995
