Up Close: “hand, writing” by Julia Solomonoff | THE SHED
Julia Solomonoff’s “hand, writing” was commissioned for The Shed’s “Up Close” digital commissioning program. It is a casual, intimate exploration of lockdown and the unexpected consequences of our fast conversion from physical to virtual life.
In the short film, Julia’s voice resonates with nostalgia, while her daughter Nina explores with humor these artifacts from the recent past: personal notebooks, physical calendars, the distinct identity of handwriting and the mystery of doodles.
Julia Solomonoff is an Argentine filmmaker living in New York. She wrote and directed three feature films: "Hermanas," "The Last Summer of la Boyita," and "Nobody’s Watching," and the documentary series "Aerocene Pacha" and "Paraná, biography of a river." Her films were selected at Cannes, Toronto and San Sebastian, New Directors/New Films, and Tribeca Film Festival.
ABOUT THE FULL SERIES “hand, writing”:
"hand, writing" was made during the pandemic, with the elements Solomonoff had available–her kids, her iPhone, and “some observations and many questions.” It is an intimate, witty film-essay exploring the fast transition from physical to virtual life brought about by the pandemic. It started as an exploration on memory and its relationship to the physical world. The film explores these issues with curiosity, tenderness and lightness, as an intimate diary, resonating with questions both personal and political.
