If you’re looking to get into reselling, consider looking at video games. Will Crawford is a reseller who buys things locally below market value and sells them online at a profit. Today Will is sharing how he started reselling video games and expanded into other areas.

How Did You Get Into Reselling Video Games?

Will says he grew up with video games and was steeped in Nintendo culture, so that was a niche he was comfortable with and knew about. He started flipping video games six years ago for pocket change and was flipping to increase his video game collection.

His wife was working part-time and was making about $2 an hour after childcare, so they decided to increase the flipping business to make up for his wife’s income. She quit her job and stayed home with their three kids, all boys under 10. Will sourced items, and his wife helped list them. It gave her time freedom and ability to make money still.

Are Video Games Still Selling Well?

Video games started doing well during the pandemic when everyone stayed home. Many people began collecting video games, and people are now tripling prices because they are still selling well. It’s cyclical, though. Will says if all you sell is video games, you'll have some great times. You'll have some feasts, and you’ll have some famines too. It always comes back around, though.

What Items Do You Look To Source?

Will calls himself an everything seller, but he tends to focus on small electronics that don’t have lithium batteries and can be shipped in the mail. He has sold clothes. A Christopher and Banks clothing store was going out of business near him in early 2020, and he saw a liquidation sign. He walked in, asked how much for everything, and left his card. Two weeks later, he got a call from the liquidator and bought all the items. He purchased about $15,000 worth of merchandise to sell and list on eBay. It was easy just to copy-paste and copy-paste the listings. He prefers to sell new clothes to second-hand ones.

Where Are You Finding Your Items To Flip?

Will looks for his items at yard sales. He generally looks for community or neighborhood sales where he can hit a lot of houses at once. He starts early as people put their stuff out and asks if they have video games. Will always asks because sometimes people have a box in the closet they forgot to bring out. He uses Craigslist to find yard sales.

What Role Does Your Wife Play Now?

Will’s wife homeschools their kids during the day and helps with eBay listings. It’s a partnership between the two of them.

What’s A Favorite Flip?

Will went to a community yard sale with about 30 homes. He was supposed to be there selling his stuff with a family member. But he got there early and drove around to shop first and filled his car. One find was a bin of Legos that was $50 for the whole thing. He also added other items to get a big bundle for $240. When he got home, he and the kids started putting the Legos together, he realized he had some expensive kits. One Lego Minifigure was selling for $110. So they threw them on eBay as the kids built the kits. He’s made almost $2,000.

What Items Have Been A Flop?

Will says he went to Target and bought a ton of soccer gear when it was 75% off. He planned to sell it at 50% retail. Unfortunately, all that stuff was heavy to ship, so he had zero money listing it. He has only received lowball offers. He still has $850 of soccer gear sitting in his shed.

What Platforms Do You Sell On?

Will sells on eBay and Amazon. He dipped his toes into Mercari but only sold one item and is maxed out with 100 listed (he used Flip to crosspost), so he’s not putting much effort into listing on Mercari.

What Advice Would You Give To Someone Starting Out Reselling?

Will says to start with what you know. If you collect something, look through your collection, and find something that you could live without. Look up the value of it and sell that. Then use it as your seed money to start getting going. Wrap the profits back in everything you sell and put it into high-quality inventory.

The second thing is to invest in the equipment you need early on, such as a postal scale and printer.
