Dutch Grand Prix 1939

First street race Circuit Zandvoort. Netherlands (3 June 1939)

Circuit Zandvoort is a 4.259 km (2.646 mi) motorsport race track located in the dunes north of Zandvoort, Netherlands, near the North Sea coast line. It returned to the Formula One calendar in 2021 as the location of the revived Dutch Grand Prix.

On June 3, 1939, the first Zandvoort Grand Prix was held. The current Formula 1 circuit did not yet exist untill 1948.

In 1939 the circuit ran on ordinary streets at the edge of the village, a new neighborhood whose houses had yet to be built. The course was very winding, as it is today, and the drivers had to constantly shift gears.

An amateur film-maker had lined up at one of the sharpest corners, no doubt hoping for a spectacle, but no major accidents occurred. There were seven races in different cylinder classes. Prior to the fastest class, two demonstration runs took place by well-known foreign drivers with special racing cars, of which the futuristic model "Auto Union Avus Stromlinie" by the German driver Hans von Struck is beautifully shown on the film. The event attracted thousands of visitors, including Prince Bernard, who showed great interest in the faster cars.

The race was won by Piet Nortier.
