Miles M.52: The British X-1
In 1943, the British Air Ministry released an ambitious specification calling for the development of an aircraft that could reach 1000mph in level flight - faster than the speed of sound. Within a year, the Miles Aircraft Company of Berkshire created one of the most advanced aircraft designs of the 1940s: the jet-powered Miles M.52, which had it not been prematurely cancelled would likely have beaten the American Bell X-1 to breaking the sound barrier.
