This 1970s NASA documentary features the nine astronauts who participated in the 1973 Skylab missions and shows viewers some of the experiments and research they conducted as part of the Skylab program. The film opens with a shot of a space launch site and Skylab astronauts speaking to the camera about the program. Viewers see members from the three missions, including Paul J. Weitz, Gerald P. Carr, Owen K Garriott, William R. Pogue, Alan L. Bean, Joseph P. Kerwin, Edward G. Gibson, Jack R. Lousma, and Charles Conrad, Jr. Several astronauts maneuver through Skylab (02:54). Footage shows NASA’s control room, and then astronauts doing a skywalk to free a jammed satellite from Skylab. An astronaut works on something, possibly fuel cell system inside the space station (04:23). One of the men performs a routine medical examination on his fellow astronaut. One astronaut lies in a chamber while having his cardiovascular system monitored. Viewers see one of the astronauts riding an exercise bike (appears to be Pogue). An astronaut tests a rotating chair in space designed to measure motion sickness (06:45). Footage from a telescope shows solar flares on the surface of the Sun (08:53). An astronaut moves through the space station, and viewers see an eruptive prominence on the disc of the Sun as it moves out through the corona; the mission also records a full solar flare. One astronaut hooks up a special camera to measure and photograph ultraviolet radiation (11:10). Another man uses foot straps to stay on the ground while shaving. Footage shows the astronauts moving through Skylab in zero gravity. Three of the men do aerial tricks in a large chamber in Skylab, playing around with zero gravity (12:40). One astronaut prepares food for dinner (13:24). Another vacuums the screen filter for the air ventilation system. 14:22 Viewers also see one of the astronauts showering (14:22) and another sleeping in a sleeping bag in a standing position. One of the astronauts sets up lenses for a camera (15:12), and the film shows some of the photographs of the Earth’s fault lines, weather development (including a cyclone), infrared photographs of forests and crops, photographs of plankton in the sea, and a draught area in Central Africa (18:07). Other photographs include shots of the western shore of Lake Superior where pollution is visible. A satellite moves out into orbit away from Skylab (19:23). Footage shows the astronauts conducting other experiments, including the February 1974 retrieval of Skylab’s film. Footage shows Skylab from the point of view of the command module as it leaves the space station (20:48). Viewers see the module in the ocean, followed by footage of the members of Skylab 4 being helped out of the module aboard a Navy vessel. The film then shows previous clips again (including footage of astronauts exercising, photographs of Earth’s surface, photographs of the Sun, and the astronauts operating equipment aboard Skylab). Two astronauts work outside Skylab, concluding the film.
