BFR Interval Training: Does It Really Improve Performance?

Can blood flow restriction make interval training more effective?

In this video, we break down a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation by Zheng and colleagues, titled “Effects of blood flow restriction interval training on aerobic, anaerobic capacity, and muscle strength in healthy adults.”

The researchers analyzed 24 studies with 607 healthy adults to investigate whether blood flow restriction interval training can improve aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity, and muscle strength compared with interval training alone.

The results suggest that BFR interval training may improve aerobic capacity by a small but significant amount and muscle strength by a moderate amount. However, the evidence for anaerobic power is still uncertain.

This video explains how BFR works, why low-to-moderate intensity intervals may be useful, what the science says about strength gains, and why BFR should not be treated as a magic shortcut for sprint performance.
