Chase Freedom Unlimited Honest Review With New Benefits! | GOOD OR BAD IN 2020??

ABOUT: This is a credit card review of the Chase Freedom Unlimited. This is a card that I’ve had for a long time, and the benefits have been the same for years until September 13th. Chase unexpectedly added a bunch of new features for the card! I’ll go over each benefit, both existing and new, and compare them to similar cards on the market. Then at the end I’ll give you the 4 main situations where you would want to get this card, and if you fit into one of these you should check it out with the link in the description.

TLDR of TLDW:

There are 4 situations where you would want this card.

The first situation is if you your looking for a general purpose card to complement the sapphire reserve. If you don’t have that card, then go with the Citi double cash card

The second situation where you would want this card is if you’re looking to finance a bigger purchase. You can use the 0% interest period to pay up front, and slowly pay off the balance over the 15 months.

Third you can use it for credit card churning, where you get the card and use it to get the sign up bonus, then never touch it again. There’s no annual fee with the Freedom Unlimited so you can open it, get your 200 bucks, and peace out

Fourth reason is if you are going to travel, dine out, and or purchase from drugstores a lot and don’t have a credit card that covers any of those. The points for these categories is actually pretty high, and again these perks are totally free.

TLDW:

First up let's talk about the existing benefits that the card has had for years. The main benefit is you earn unlimited 1.5% back in chase points on all purchases. This is decent, it’s the industry standard rate. Its not amazing but not terrible either by itself. When paired with the sapphire reserve’s 50% redemption bonus this effectively goes up to 2.25%, making the cash back return one of the biggest for general purpose cards out there. If you don’t have the sapphire reserve and you’re looking for a better card, check out the Citi double cash card. For a general purpose card you’re going to get a better return because it gives 2% cash back instead of 1.5.

Next, the Freedom Unlimited comes with a sign up bonus of 200 dollars after spending 500 dollars within 3 months of opening your account, which is pretty reasonable. It’s always had no annual fees which is one of the biggest reasons to get this card since there’s no downside to getting it.

You also get 0% interest for 15 months after you open the card. The rewards are great that you are able to use them whenever you want for any amount, and they never expire. There are lots of other benefits listed but honestly most of these aren’t very useful, unique, or have free alternatives anyone can use.

For the new benefits, you get a 5% back on all travel booked through Chase’s travel site, which could go up to 7.5% with the sapphire reserve redemption bonus. If you’ve never used their travel site before, it has almost the exact same flights you’d find on kayak or Expedia. For comparison, the sapphire reserve gives 3% back, or 4.5% back with the redemption bonus, on ALL travel - but keep in mind it has a hefty 550 dollar annual fee. With the freedom unlimited you now also get 5% back, 7.5% after the bonus, on all Lyft rides through March 2022

Next up Chase added 3% back, or 4.5% after the bonus, on all dining, including most take out and delivery services. If you have the Sapphire Reserve (or a similar card like Amex Gold) you already have this, but if you don’t have that card its even more icing on the cake.

You’ll inevitable get lunch from chipotle or go out to dinner with friends at some point so getting cash back on that is just more rewards for those purchases. You also get 3 months of 0 delivery fees with door dash. And again, this is all totally free so there’s no downside to getting these benefits.

Finally, they added 3% back, 4.5% after the bonus, on all drugstore purchases like CVS and Walgreens. This card is now tied for the highest cash back cards in this category, aside from rotating category cards
