Veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 101. He served as Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011, becoming the oldest person to assume the office at age 82. A founding member of CPI(M), he was a Politburo member from 1985 to 2009 and held the record for the longest-serving Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly (15 years across three terms in the 1990s and early 2000s). Known for his simplicity, integrity, and anti-corruption stance, he initiated key actions like land reclamation in Munnar and infrastructure projects, including Kollam Technopark and tourism renovations. Born in Alappuzha to a poor Ezhava family, he joined the freedom movement, faced imprisonment in 1946, and entered politics through trade union activities.
