Politics & Feminism in India

In India today, we see Hindu supremacist #politics display intense hostility to #feminism - while at the same time attempting to give its Islamophobic agenda a seemingly feminist disguise.

On the other hand, we see “business as usual” politics (the politics of pre-2014 regimes) valorise “empowerment” or “uplifting” of women while insisting that feminist agendas are unrealistic and impractical.
Is feminism a core component of progressive or broadly left politics and people’s movements? Or is feminism face apathy, disparagement, and isolation even in progressive political spaces?

KAVITA KRISHNAN

#KavitaKrishnan is a communist #feminist activist. She has been active since the early 1990s in student movements and a range of other people’s movements. She is currently Secretary of the All India Progressive Women’s Association and Politburo member of the CPIML Liberation. She is the author of Fearless Freedom, a book that communicates how “protection” of women from #sexualviolence is a widespread pretext to justify violence by family, community, educational institutions, the state, and vigilante political outfits against women’s autonomy.
