SA's Economic Crisis: When Minimum Wage Can't Even Buy Food

In this fiery report, Sama Sambit reveals that the average household food basket now costs more than the national minimum wage. Using data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, he highlights that while food prices are rising, with a 3.6% year-on-year increase, the national minimum wage is R5 297. This means that full-time workers cannot afford to feed their families. Sambit also points out that families are underspending on food by nearly 40% and that impending electricity price hikes will only worsen the crisis. He condemns the situation as "economic violence against the poor" and a breakdown of the social contract.
