The patient who changed my life | Prof John Isaacs | TEDxNewcastle

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Head of the Institute of Cellular
Medicine and the patient who changed his life.

A joint Thinking Digital Production with Newcastle University. Sponsored by Newcastle University and supported by Newcastle Science City.

Professor John Isaacs is a clinical scientist with a passion for translational research driven by his curiosity and the needs of his patients. He began his medical career at St George's Hospital in London, taking in a stint at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston as part of the Hammersmith-Harvard exchange programme, before completing his PhD at Cambridge. It was at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge that John met a patient who changed the direction of his research -- and his life -- forever. That meeting spurred him on to become one of the best known names in his new-found field -- Clinical Rheumatology. He went on to become Professor of Clinical Rheumatology and Director of the Institute of Cellular Medicine at Newcastle University. In his spare time, John enjoys music and running. He is a regular Great North Run participant, and plays saxophone for "The Joy of Sax" based at the Sage Gateshead.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
