Bobby Darin: Beyond the Sea, Simple Song of Freedom
In 1972 singer, songwriter and actor Bobby Darin was the guest in a CBC Vancouver Television series and sang his hits Beyond the Sea and Simple Song of Freedom, backed by Vancouver's Doug Parker Orchestra. Beyond the Sea, the English language version of Charles Trenet's French hit song La Mer (the Sea), was Darin's follow up to Mack the Knife, the Grammy winning Record of the Year in 1960 which was #1 for 9 weeks. Sea was also the title of a 2004 film on the Bobby Darin story starring Kevin Spacey. Song of Freedom was written by Darin in '69 and recorded by Tim Hardin. Other hits include Splish Splash, Dream Lover, If I Were a Carpenter, Things, You're the Reason I'm Living and 18 Yellow Roses. Darin died in 1973 aged 37 following heart surgery.
