Building My CHILDHOOD DREAM Game Boy!

I recently discovered my old Nintendo Game Boy in a box. Having not been turned on for about 30 years, I wasn't expecting much, but to my surprise it worked!

The experience? Not quite as I remember it. These dinosaurs were built by Nintendo with one thing in mind, to be as cheap to buy and with as much battery life as possible, so the screens on these things are absolutely terrible.

But what can modern technology bring to the table? I got to work researching and discovered a whole world of aftermarket mods to bring some 21st century life into this old classic.

So today we're going to take an old Game Boy and turn it into something that would have made me the coolest kid at school back in 1990!

🔥 PARTS USED:
Original Game Boy DMG - If doing a re-shell, you actually only need the original motherboard, audio interface board and power regulator. Everything else is replaced as part of the kit, so if you don't want to fork out for an old Game Boy, you can usually find motherboards available on their own relatively cheaply.

RIPS V4 IPS LCD Upgrade Kit, Shell and Buttons - I experimented with a buch of different kits and found this one to be the best value for money. It offers a slightly larger than stock screen with some cool colour profiles and even a retro pixel effect.

Optional Extras:
You can choose from a selection of different colour shells, buttons and membranes on AliExpress HERE:

🔥 TAKING IT EVEN FURTHER:
There are even more mods you can do to improve on the original Game Boy, including upgraded Power Regulators to clean up the power and audio, amplifier mods to increase volume, etc. Best to do your own research on this one. A few sites I've used include:

Handheld Legend: https://handheldlegend.com/
Retro Modding: https://www.retromodding.com/

🔥 ALTERNATIVES:
In addition to apps like Retroarch which you can run on existing devices such as your phone, tablet, Apple TV, or PC, there are a tonne of relatively cheap handheld devices out there that can play pretty much everything from early Atari and Arcade Games, all the way up to PS1, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, etc.

My current personal favourite (out of the ones I've tested) is the Ambernic RG35XX H which you can grab HERE:

I'd highly recommend checking out Retro Game Corps for a bunch of amazing reviews and guuides which have really helped me get up to speed in the world of Retro Gaming! - https://www.youtube.com/c/retrogamecorps
