One of the greatest and most well-known philosopher of Chinese history, Confucius belonged to the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. His thoughts were called Confucianism, and they emphasized personal and governmental morality, justice and sincerity. During the Hundred Schools of Thought era, his views were suppressed in favor of the Legalists during the Qin Dynasty. During the Han period, his thoughts received official sanction. He championed strong family loyalty, ancestor veneration, and respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives, recommending family as a basis for ideal government.
