WAGO 750-881 Restored Fine but Still Would Not Start "This is the kind of service call that makes people question a spare controller even when the spare is probably not the real problem. A WAGO 750-881 was replaced in a TwinCAT 2 system. A backup was taken from a working unit with WagoUpload because the original Codesys 2.3 source project was not available. The restore completed, no obvious error showed up, and the replacement still sat in Online Configuration mode instead of running the machine. That is exactly why I keep telling people that a backup file and a recovery plan are not always the same thing. A utility can pull useful information from a controller, but that does not guarantee you now own a complete, runnable application in a form that behaves exactly like the original deployment. When source files are missing, every restore should be treated as a test, not a promise. My first checks in a situation like this are simple on purpose. I verify the exact model and firmware. I confirm the mode selector is really in the correct run position. I compare the startup behavior to the healthy unit. I look for signs that the boot project is not present the way I expected. If the hardware and firmware line up, the next move is to question the restore method itself rather than assuming the controller is defective. There is a real comparison here. WagoUpload is useful when you are under pressure and the original project is gone. The proper Codesys project route is slower to recover, but it gives you much more certainty, better editability, and a better chance of making the spare truly match the live machine. That difference matters when production is waiting. Legacy controller support is becoming more common, not less. If you work around older automation systems, it pays to learn the difference between a file that transfers and a project that actually restores a machine to service.
