The Unexpected... During Mountain Flight (Voice over fixed - min 34:00)

On June 7th, 2024, at 5ish, my friend Phong and I embarked on an afternoon adventure from Paine Field. We soared into the sky in a Cessna Skyhawk, equipped with an advanced autopilot system featuring ESP "Electronic Stability Protection."

ESP is an advanced safety feature in some autopilot systems designed to help prevent the aircraft from entering unsafe flight conditions by automatically adjusting the controls to maintain stability.

It was an amazing clear sky day, and the wind conditions were perfect for this journey over the beautiful Washington landscape. As we ascended, the iconic silhouette of Mount Pilchuck came into view, its majestic peaks glowing under the waning sunlight. We gracefully circled the mountain, soaking in the breathtaking views before setting a direct course towards Darrington (1S2).

Approaching Darrington, the challenge began. The terrain around the airfield was rugged and unforgiving, with the ESP system persistently cautioning me about the potential dangers. This approach, with its close proximity to mountains, was a brand new experience for me with this airplane. The automated warnings and my determination to descend created a tense scenario. Each attempt to lower my altitude at the necessary rate was thwarted by the protective system, preventing me from positioning the airplane safely for landing. I realized I didn't remember how to deactivate the ESP system for such situations, adding to the complexity of the landing attempt.

Realizing the increasing difficulty and prioritizing safety, I made a decisive choice. Applying full power, I abandoned the tricky landing attempt and set my course back towards the familiar surroundings of Paine Field. The return flight was a blend of relief and reflection, the experience serving as a testament to the importance of balancing technology and pilot instinct.
As we touched down back home, I felt a deepened respect for both the aircraft's advanced systems and the unpredictable beauty of nature, and I promptly asked for information on how to deactivate the ESP system, ensuring that I would be better prepared for similar situations in the future.

Except for those videos where a guest CFI is teaching something, my interaction in my videos is not intended to educate, train, instruct or teach you how to fly.
