HP USB and Fan Not Connected Error Fix
Upcycling an old HP motherboard and putting it in a nicer case, but getting this error?
Error 922-Front USB not connected occured! Press F1 to Boot!
Or a system fan not connected error?
Here's how to fix it on an HP Prodesk 400 SFF Gen 2.5 motherboard, but the same techniques work on many other boards:
HP uses proprietary front panel USB headers on many of it's motherboards (HP Prodesk 400, HP Elitedesk, etc). They require a grounded sense pin for the board to know they are plugged in, but most cases don't wire these pins. This is how to fix them:
USB 2 header connect pins 10 and 8 (connect with jumper if not using, solder a wire across if using [only necessary on some boards])
USB 3 header solder wire from pin 10 to pin 7 on the back of the motherboard.
Solder the tachometer pin from the CPU fan header to the tachometer pin from the case fan header. The reason why you'd do this is that HP uses a proprietary case fan design. Other fans will work if you break off the plastic tab, but only at full speed. So, you'd want to do this mod and just use a different fan controller or a splitter from the CPU fan header.
Here is a guide that was helpful in tracking down and solving these errors: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Disable-Bypass-quot-F1-to-Boot-quot-prompt-HP-ProDesk/td-p/6778668
I've shown how to fix these errors in two other videos, but in this video I just wanted to show the easiest fix for both: solder two wires.
