How much do authors really make self-publishing (surprise!)

Most authors lose money publishing, because they just want to pay someone to do everything for them. I strongly recommend learning the basics of self-publishing, cover design and book marketing - at least so that you can understand what's worth paying for and when you're being ripped off. Something like 95% of authors never sell more than 100 books. Most authors never make a profit. Those who succeed, are indie authors with a lot of experience and a big backlist, who are doing everything right and investing big in ads and marketing. PS - how much are you earning in book sales? How much do you want to make? I'm up to around $1000 a month but I spend most of that on ads: planning to scale to $10K this year if I can finish 3 series, and get out the boxsets and audiobooks.
