The Watch I Love… That I Don’t Wear

There’s one watch in my collection that I reach for almost more than any other…

And most days, I put it right back.

In this video, I share the story of my IWC Big Pilot — the first watch that ever felt truly serious to me. I bought it about 15 years ago while working at a pawn shop. At the time, spending that much on a watch felt massive. It was the biggest watch purchase I had ever made.

Back then, I wore it everywhere — to work, to the gym, cycling… it didn’t matter. Scratches were character. Dings were stories. It wasn’t a collectible. It was just my watch.

Recently, after years of wear, I paid $1,250 for a full service. When it came back looking brand new, something shifted. Now I hesitate. I think about value. I think about resale. I think about protecting it.

And that made me ask a hard question:

Did becoming a serious watch collector make me wear my favorite watch less?

This isn’t just about an IWC Big Pilot. It’s about collecting, attachment, risk, growth, and how knowledge can sometimes change the way we enjoy the things we love.
